Diabetes education services have been a part of SUPERVALU Pharmacies' clinical services since 1994. Clinical Specialists can provide diabetes services only after completing an extensive training program and orientation. This training, which utilizes home study, hands-on and face-to-face instruction, covers all areas of diabetes care and incorporates management of other disease states related to diabetes. Each Clinical Specialist must work to accrue the 1,000 direct patient care hours that are required to sit for the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) exam. Our Clinical Specialists provide private, individual training sessions and group education programs for patients using our standard patient care curriculum.
Recognition of Quality
All Clinical Specialists use a standardized diabetes curriculum. This curriculum includes private diabetes education sessions to target development of individual self-care needs as well as group sessions to allow guided patient interaction. In addition, point-of-care tests allow our Clinical Specialists to effectively measure and manage the patient's A1c, blood pressure and lipids. Employer groups and other national and local third party payers have recognized our specialists as education providers because of this standard of quality.
In addition, our Arlington Heights, IL location received approval from the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Program and is listed as an ADA Recognized Provider of Diabetes Education.
Like all of our clinical services, diabetes sessions are offered to the patient for a fee. We currently receive payment for our services from a variety of sources: government programs, health plans, employers, grant funding, or direct payment from the patient themselves.
