| Medication Therapy Management |
Medication therapy management (MTM) is pharmacist-delivered patient care in the purest sense. Identifying, resolving and preventing drug therapy problems is what pharmacists are best trained to do. With the passage of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 and the start of the Medicare Part D benefit in 2006, came an unprecedented opportunity for community pharmacists. Medicare Part D and MTM represent an important step in a paradigm shift in the profession of pharmacy. Pharmacists are getting paid for what they do best! SUPERVALU Pharmacies quickly recognized the opportunity presented by Medicare Part D and MTM. In fact, SUPERVALU Pharmacies had been testing MTM services and planning for this opportunity. In 2005, Humana selected SUPERVALU as their partner to conduct a pilot MTM program. The pilot was a success, and SUPERVALU Pharmacies committed to continuing the program and expanding to markets around the country. SUPERVALU Pharmacies services many patients, including members of Medicare Part D plans, state Medicaid, employer groups and private insurers. Patients also pay out-of-pocket for clinical services. MTM includes both targeted interventions, provided as part of our Integrated Services as well as comprehensive MTM services, which our Clinical Specialists provide by appointment.
As part of MTM initiatives, our pharmacists documented thousands of interventions that have saved payers and patients hundreds of thousands of dollars in drug and medical costs.
