Keeping in touch with the students that work for us is a priority at SUPERVALU Pharmacies. Students have a chance to meet with our recruiters and Pharmacy District Managers at a variety of campus events through out the school year. In addition, we use e-mail communication as a way to keep students informed and in touch with the company. Below are just a few examples of the communications we send out to our students.

Diabetes Awareness By: Lisa Santangelo, Jewel-Osco Pharmacy Intern
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) reported in January 2011 that 25.8 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. That is 8.3 of the population! An estimated 79 million additional people are prediabetic, which means more than 25 of the U.S. population is at risk of developing diabetes. Some of the complications of uncontrolled or undermanaged diabetes include heart disease, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, neuropathy and amputation. The ADA estimates the average medical costs among patients with diabetes are 2.3 times higher than for non-diabetic patients. Pharmacists and pharmacy interns can play a role in helping these patients manage and control their diabetes and its costs.

Outcomes
ARx has developed a clinical interventions enhancement that will help identify, document, and bill clinical interventions. The addition is a prompt for official documentation and tracking of Outcomes eligible prescriptions, and this allows the pharmacy to receive compensation for the successful interventions that are made. It is not a cognitive entity and it does not have the power to replace pharmacists. Rather, the clinical interventions enhancement provides pharmacists and students with even more of an opportunity to improve personalized care and take on a more active role in medication therapy management.

New Drug Update By: Lisa Santangelo, Jewel-Osco Pharmacy Intern
A new drug called Xarelto (ribaroxaban) has been approved, and you may start seeing it in your stores! It is the first oral Factor Xa Inhibitor, used to anticoagulant patients after a hip or knee surgery. This can be an alternative to Lovenox (enoxaparin) for some patients. Xarelto works by inhibiting platelet activation and fibrin clot formation via reversible inhibition of factor Xa.
